Community Outreach

The Castro-Lowenstein Laboratory is deeply committed to engaging with the broader community, including patients, patient advocacy organizations, and policymakers, to strengthen connections between the scientific community and society. A central goal of these efforts is to increase awareness of glioblastoma (GBM), educate the public about the disease, and provide hope to patients and their families through advances in research.

The laboratory actively participates in community outreach initiatives, including the Annual American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) BT5K Run/Walk. By joining patients, caregivers, survivors, and advocates at this event, laboratory members help raise awareness, demonstrate support for those affected by brain tumors, and reinforce their commitment to improving outcomes through research, advocacy, and community partnerships.

Mentorship is also a cornerstone of the laboratory’s mission. Lab members mentor undergraduate students recruited from diverse programs across the University of Michigan. These programs provide students with unique opportunities to explore careers in biomedical research by working alongside scientists on impactful research projects, fostering the next generation of physician-scientists and biomedical researchers.
